ProWritingAid –Best for fiction and Scrivener writers

Based in London, ProWritingAid is a software firm that was founded back in 2012. The grammar checker software is designed to be a virtual writing tutor and personal writing coach as well as a grammar and and spell checker. After testing ProWritingAid against all her top competitors in spell and grammar checks, I found that the tool features some pretty powerful software. ProWritingAid’s editor, like Grammarly’s underlines all spelling and grammatical errors on the article and also includes more suggestions. For newbies, the different types of reports on the writing may be, at first, confusing, but you will quickly learn the ropes once you have clicked on each suggestion or mistake.

Particularly, I was impressed by ProWritingAid’s feature called Echoes. “Echoes” is designed to identify zones in your article or blog where you have overused phrases or other words. It is especially useful when improving your writing skills. ProWritingAid also identified clichés in my document, which is nothing short of impressive for grammar and spell checking software.

While the ProWritingAid website claims the software supports at least twenty languages, the ProWritingAid premium version that I tested only supported British and American English. The software is therefore not ideal if you plan on writing in more than one language or are just learning English.

Another misfortune I found with the software is that it took significantly longer than grammarly and Ginger to identify mistakes in my document. Its user interface is also a little tacky and needs a littke polishing to match Grammarly’s.

While less powerful and user-friendly than Grammarly, ProWritingAid bases its readability score for your article on the Flesch Reading core. It is one of the most accurate ways to determine a writer’s sentence structures and can, therefore, be a useful tool for those seeking to improve their web writing skills.

Ginger is an Israeli-based corporation that was setup back in 2007. It is, therefore one of the more established grammar and spelling checkers available on the market. Ginger, like Grammarly, offers free spelling and grammar check as well as a premium online proofreading tool. The quickest way to get started on Ginger is installing its Chrome extension or for any other supported browser. 

Ginger has a reputation for the value of the service it offers its users. What’s more, it does also provide desktop apps for Mac and Windows. For Android, you will have to use a keyboard or copy and paste your content onto their web app. It also features a punctuation checker for Gmail text correction. Below are some of the other key features Ginger offers:

  • Ginger is available for advanced tools like Slack and provides  Mac and Windows desktop apps

The feature should be very appealing to those learning to write in English for their first time or have not had enough writing experience. With this tool, you could write your article in Spanish, translate it into English, then do a grammar check to correct any translation errors all within the one application.
  • Ginger also provides a personal dictionary if you would like to add some words that you do not want to identify as grammar or spelling errors. This feature is particularly helpful to fiction writers that have unusual character names in their text. This feature lacks in Grammarly, making Ginger more ideal for fiction writers than the former.

Unlike Grammarly, Ginger fails to avail their Mac desktop app just yet. However, Ginger offers decent features that are not available on Grammarly and other premium grammar checkers on the market. For instance, I noticed that Ginger puts headings in bold and formats the document professionally. Grammarly, ProWritingAid and WhiteSmoke do not have this feature.

Ginger is as accurate as Grammarly in finding and fixing spelling and grammar errors as well as punctuation mistakes. However, the tool is less insistent when it comes to comma usage in my text. You will also have to hover over the grammatical errors rather than showing them in a sidebar like in Grammarly. While it would be a convenient feature, it is just but a small gripe in a list of intuitive features.

While Whitesmoke is not as easy to use or as fast as Grammarly, it offers commendable accuracy in finding and fixing grammar and spelling mistakes. However, making corrections to your text will involve an extra step when compared to grammarly in that you will have to export the final version of your content to a text document.

Like ProWritingAid, Whitesmoke is more affordable than Grammarly Premium. However, unlike ProWritingAid, the tool allows you to download mobile apps as well.
